A look at The Unofficial GBA Pixel Book
Picked up this book (see this link for more movies and still images of this book than I provide) a bit ago and have been going through it from time to time. I was hoping when I bought it for better games to be included but I suppose being unofficial they can probably only show some A-list and B-list games yet it does have a huge Pokemon section. So who knows?
Being a lover of pixel art my entire life even while I was an art director this book keeps my attention every time I pick it up. It’s a rather large book at 300 pages. The book is published by my favorite coffee table book company for video games Bitmap Books out of London. It’s interesting reading how some of the graphics came to be and the workload around them. I would if it wasn’t already on their site list some of the games included here in my review of the book. Also while I can go on and on about how I enjoyed the book. Not my favorite though from Bitmap but is still good to throw on the shelf and take out now and again for a quick second-read book.
Bitmap books are best purchased directly from them as you can get pre-orders in and their shipping prices are very fair considering they are coming from overseas. When you get the book the presentation after you open the cardboard box is amazing. It’s wrapped in thin paper with their logo and some other shapes on it. You can rip it open like a present someone gave you! Below are some of the shots of some of the pages in the book but as I said above go to their site for a much better experience of what the book is and how it’s laid out. LOTS of pictures even a quick little movie of the book cover and pages flipping.
What a steal!
So Fandango/Vudu streaming service where you buy or rent movies had this set on sale Called Bugs Bunny 80th Anniversary Collection: A Wild Hare. WHAT A VALUE! 60 cartoons from the 40’s-60’s then there’s one recent one. The quality is pretty good IMO for cartoons this old. We see Elmer with his shotgun going nuts on Bugs, Bugs smoking a cigar, and the evolution of the character’s style/voice/attitude.
By today’s standards these cartoons would not have even been drawn by hand let alone have the content that you see in some of the episodes. It’s good to see the cartoons I grew up with still being aired in the 80s! Next thing ya know the 90’s roll around and everything has to be P freaking C and cartoons like these get locked up and tossed off the air for crap like iCarly or some other real-life kids show. However, in place of these, we did get some great shows like Animaniacs and the Disney Afternoon!
This set is well worth it to any Bugs / WB lover! For $19.99 ya get 60 episodes all going from Mar. 2 1940 up to a few in the 1960’s and only one that’s modern as of 1997 which is good but shouldn’t even be there given the fact these are the classics! Check out my screencaps below!
The sounds of arcade history!
I had this file back in the early 2000’s and would often put it on while playing my home made MAME Cabinet before everyone had these prefab things. I had to sell it before I moved but to this day I hear this audio and remember the good ol days. Oh and I’d also put on Journey at a level you could hear it just under this file. Take a listen and remember there were places filled with this much magic!
